Season 53 was better than expected, although it starts being usual to have a great first half and then team pays the bill and struggles a bit through second half. Anyway, the development of the new star Xalbador Varela is in the way to become the leader everybody within the team hopes him to be.
Highlights of the season were definitely on him, getting the first jersey for the team at Giro di Montelbano YC and a second place overall, getting into the podium at Norway Tour SC and even wearing the Spanish Champion jersey for a few days, which made him take his debut in the national team.
"I feel I'm doing right, step by step and trying not to be in a hurry", he said. "I felt at some points my lack of experience, but fighting now with older great riders is making me take note of their tips for the future, I'm fairly optimistic". Asked about his first win at Giro di Montelbano, he declared: "It was an absolute surprise, as I entered the Tour with not clear expectations but adding kilometers in my legs. And all of a sudden, I'm on the podium with the green jersey handed over by Sandro Montelbano himself at his homeland. It was such a special moment to meet one of my idols that way, it was really emotional".
About this new season plans he said being prepared to anything the team would ask from him. "I know we are going to make Giro di Montelbano again, hopefully with a good result. Then the plan is taking it easy as we have already tested DIV 2 and that's definitely another level. Maybe focus on Norway Tour couple of stages and then a serious try at Kangaroo in Australia, where the team has good expectations. Maybe after this year we will be able then to start thinking of higher goals. No rush. "
The team management has 100% suscribed Varela's words and hopes this one to be a good season, although focusing more into inner development than results themselves, being sure that the correct steps in the plan will bring those by their own.
